United Way Leeds & Grenville and the Brockville and Area Community Foundation have awarded a Financial Literacy grant through the Emergency Community Support Fund
Brockville, ON - Tuesday, July 14, 2020 — This week, United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) and the Brockville and Area Community Foundation (BACF) announced that it approved a grant of $68,300 to the Volunteer Centre – St. Lawrence-Rideau. This was funded through the Government of Canada’s $350M Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF). This vast national effort aims to support vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19.
The Volunteer Centre will add a financial literacy component to their very popular Income Tax Program for low income individuals & families across Leeds & Grenville. They will continue to leverage volunteers to support the effort. Low income residents will be educated about budgeting, emergency savings, credit cards, good vs bad loans, credit scores, identity theft and fraud. This will be an effort to empower vulnerable residents and to help them not become prey to higher cost forms of credit.
“It’s great to see the United Way Leeds and Grenville & the Brockville and Area Community Foundation’ distributing funds throughout our community in a way that can maximize those dollars for the people on the ground. These have been trying times for our community but the way that people have stepped up and are going above and beyond for their neighbours is heartening. We owe our thanks to all the organizations and volunteers making this happen.” - MP Michael Barrett - Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes
“Building on the success of our Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, the Volunteer Centre of St-Lawrence-Rideau is excited to be offering a new and strategic program focused on helping people to gain more confidence in dealing with financial matters. The program will be delivered by trained volunteers focused on Financial Literacy and Empowerment leveraging the work of Prosper Canada.
Thank you to the United Way of Leeds Grenville, Brockville and Area Community Foundation, our community partners and volunteers for your support with our grant through the Government of Canada Emergency Community Response Fund.” - Mary Lynn Villeneuve, Manager Volunteer Centre of St. Lawrence-Rideau
